EAST LANSING, Mich. - Morris Peterson scored 21 points as No. 7 Michigan State routed Western Michigan 90-66 on Saturday night in the championship game of the Spartan Classic.
Andre Hutson added 15 points for Michigan State (4-1), Jason Klein had 14, and Mateen Cleaves 12. Kylo Jones led Western Michigan (2-2) with 28 points.
Western Michigan, which trailed by five points at halftime, tied it at 53 on Isaac Bullock's 3-pointer with 12:44 left in the second half, but Michigan State had a 15-3 run to take a 68-56 lead with 7:44 remaining.
The Broncos made 11 of 24 3-point attempts in the game, while Michigan State hit only one of nine from behind the arc.
Michigan State scored the last six points of the first half to take a 40-35 lead.
Thadus Williams hit a 3-pointer to give the Broncos a 24-15 lead, but the Spartans answered with 10 straight points, capped by Charlie Bell's basket off a rebound, to a 25-24 lead.
Jones missed his first shot of the game, but connected on his next eight, including six straight three-pointers. His sixth 3-pointer of the half gave Western Michigan a 35-34 lead with 2:11 left.
Jones had 22 of the Broncos' 35 first half points.
Michigan State retired the jersey of career scoring leader Shawn Respert during halftime ceremonies. Respert also is the school and Big Ten career leader in 3-point goals.
