Michigan State vs. Cleveland State Dec. 16, 2005 Post-Game Quotes

Cleveland State Head Coach Mike Garland Opening statement... "I'm really elated with our team. In every way this game made sense for Cleveland State, and I really want to thank Tom (Izzo) for giving us the opportunity to come down here and play. We have eight players from the state of Michigan on our squad, and for them to get home and play in front of their parents and loved ones is tremendous, but also for us to have the opportunity to play a program with such national esteem such as Michigan State, that just does wonders for my program, and also in terms of recruiting."

On his team's performance... "I thought tonight our kids went right at Michigan State, I have to give them a lot of credit. We came right at them, and we hit them with some body blows that might have taken a lot of teams out. They were able to withstand it and come back to win the basketball game. We played a style very similar to what they play. We were running at them and rebounding, and we were trying to hit you dead in the mouth. That's what I know, that's the way I play, that's the way my ex-boss played, and I think that's the right way to play."

Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo Opening statement... "It was a tough game for us playing during finals and my dislike for playing my former assistants. Before we berate how we played, I think we need to look at this program (Cleveland State) and it reminds me of our program in our third year. I thought their guys laid it all on the line and I thought it was a gutsy effort."

On Cleveland State... "I thought they were a fun team to watch. I don't think that they will ever hit that many three-pointers again in the first half and I told their team that. But that's what happens when you play at a level beyond where you can play at."

On Michigan State... "I know it's bizarre but I think if you had to pick a star of the game it would be the guy who scored two points, Matt Trannon. He had one of those Mateen Cleaves type halftime speeches. I told him he better have some of that left for football next year because he did a great job of working, defending, rebounding and talking."
