Spartans Fall Short Against No. 19 Temple
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Rasheed Brokenborough sank a three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining and 19th-ranked Temple held on for a 56-54 victory over Michigan State.
Brokenborough's basket gave Temple (3-1) a 55-54 edge. After Michigan State failed to score on the following possession, Keaton Sanders made a free throw to give the Owls a 56-54 lead with 41 seconds to go. Michigan State (3-2) had a chance to send the game into overtime, but David Thomas missed two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining.
Lynard Stewart scored 20 points and Lamont Barnes added 12 for Temple, which was playing for the first time since a 87-74 thrashing at the hands of Mississippi on November 22nd. The Owls have won five of nine all-time meetings with the Spartans, although the schools were playing for the first time since 1969.
Mateen Cleaves, Jason Klein and Andre Hutson each tallied 11 points for the Spartans, who were coming off victories over Central Michigan and Gonzaga in their own tournament.
