EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State basketball guards Keith Appling and Gary Harris have been named to the 2014 Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List, as announced by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Selected by the members of the association’s board of directors, they are the only two players on the 23-player list to represent the Big Ten conference. The award will be presented to the national player of the year by its namesake at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14 in Oklahoma City.
MSU is one of just six schools with two players on the list, and the only one with two backcourt players.
Harris, who was listed on the Robertson Trophy Preseason Watch List in November, ranks second in the Big Ten in scoring (18.3 ppg) and third in steals (2.1 spg). He is also averaging 3.4 steals over the last eight games. Appling (15.6 ppg) ranks third in the Big Ten averaging 4.6 assists per game and owns the fifth-best 3-point field goal percentage in the conference. The MVP of the 2013 Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic, Appling is also on the Bob Cousy Award Watch List and the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25.
While these standout players are the leading contenders to be named to the USBWA's All-America Team and as finalists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, all Division I players remain eligible for postseason honors from the USBWA. The association will announce its 2014 All-America Team in mid-March. At that time, finalists will also be chosen for the player of the year. Once finalists are announced, the entire USBWA membership will vote for the winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
