EAST LANSING, Mich. - MSU basketball senior guard Keith Appling and sophomore guard Gary Harris have been named as top 30 candidates for the men's Naismith Trophy, as announced on Thursday, Feb. 13. The trophy, presented by AT&T, is awarded to one male and one female college basketball player of the year.
MSU is one of just six schools with two players on the list, and the only one with two backcourt players.
Both players have also been named to the Robertson Trophy midseason watch list. Appling, who was named the MVP of the 2013 Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic, is also on the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 and the Bob Cousy Award Watch List. He currently ranks second in the Big Ten in assists (4.9 apg). Harris has scored 20 points or more eight times this season, including in four of the last seven games. He also leads the Big Ten in scoring (17.6 ppg) and ranks third in steals (2.0).
In March, the voting academy will select four finalists to be on the final ballot. The winner is chosen by a board of selectors vote in conjunction with fan voting, which accounts for 25 percent of the final vote. No other major award involves as much fan influence. The winner of the Naismith Trophy will be announced April 6.
