The Opening Tip
Michigan State and Maryland meet for the fourth time in the last eight years as the Spartans and Terrapins square off in the second round. The only previous meeting in the NCAA Tournament was a thriller as MSU notched a 60-58 win in the 2003 Sweet 16. The Spartans are in search of their third straight trip to the Sweet 16 and their ninth under Tom Izzo.

* The Michigan State-Maryland series is tied 2-2. The Spartans won the only previous meeting in the NCAA Tournament, a 60-58 decision in the 2003 Sweet 16 in San Antonio. Paul Davis scored MSU's final six points en route to a team-high 13 points, hitting the game-winning basket with 4.7 seconds left.

* Under head coach Tom Izzo, Michigan State has a spectacular 14-3 record in the second game of a weekend in NCAA Tournament play. The Spartans' only three losses have come when playing a No. 1 seed.

* Michigan State is appearing in its 13th straight NCAA Tournament, good for the nation's third-longest active streak.

* Tom Izzo is 32-11 (.744) all-time in NCAA Tournament action, good for the nation's third-best winning percentage among active coaches, trailing only Mike Krzyzewski (.766) and Roy Williams (.753).

* Michigan State is 11-5 all-time as a No. 5 seed, including one trip to the Final Four and three trips to the Sweet 16.

* The Big Ten Conference is 4-1 through the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

* MSU ranks seventh all-time in NCAA Tournament winning percentage at .690 (49-22).

* Raymar Morgan is one of just five players in MSU history with 1,500 career points and 700 career rebounds.

* Michigan State is 57-22 in March since 1998-99. For his career, Tom Izzo is 64-29 in March.

* Nine different Spartans are averaging 7.3 minutes or more, including seven at 20.3 minutes or more, led by Kalin Lucas at 31.6 mpg.

* MSU has used 17 different starting lineups this season.

* In 25 wins, MSU is averaging just 13.4 turnovers, compared to 15.3 in losses.

* Lucas' 25 points were the most by a Spartan in the NCAA Tournament since Drew Neitzel scored 26 against North Carolina in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
* MSU improved to 15-5 in first round games since 1985, including 10-3 under Tom Izzo.
* Raymar Morgan was limited to six minutes and one field goal attempt in the first half due to foul trouble, but recorded 11 points and four rebounds in 19 second-half minutes.
* Michigan State shot 50 percent in the first half, but just 25.9 percent in the second half.
* Michigan State committed just nine turnovers, including just two in the second half.
* Draymond Green recorded the second double-figure rebounding effort of his NCAA Tournament career, having previously grabbed 10 against Louisville in the 2009 Elite Eight.
