Three members of the 2008-09 Spartan basketball team participated in spring commencement ceremonies conducted last weekend (May 8-10) on the Michigan State University campus: forward Marquise Gray (family community services), center Goran Suton (retailing) and guard Travis Walton (family community services). Fellow senior Idong Ibok earned his bachelor's degree last May. Since 2000, 32 Spartans have received their undergraduate degrees.
"It's phenomenal to have these seniors leave MSU with a degree," said head coach Tom Izzo. "It speaks volumes for them, volumes for the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center and the people in it, and volumes for our program, that there really is a commitment to academic achievement."
"This is a dream come true for me," said Gray. "I had all the odds against me coming in, but I managed to make it through. It's a big accomplishment and I'm the first one in my family to do it. A lot of college athletes don't finish their degree or experience what I have, so I view it all as a blessing."
"We are students before athletes and we take a lot of pride in that," said Suton. "It's the biggest accomplishment I've ever had along with making it to the Final Four. It's been a successful year and great end to my career."
"It means a lot to get our degrees," said Walton. "We put a lot of work in off the court, but not a lot of people get to see it. This is our proof that we are students first and athletes second."
