June 4, 2008
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University graduates Drew Neitzel and Alisa Wulff were recognized as Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners, announced by the conference office on Wednesday. The Spartan pair were among the 22 Big Ten student-athletes, one male and one female selection per school, who were chosen from a group of 275 student-athletes honored throughout the academic year. Neitzel, a starting guard on MSU's men's basketball squad, earns the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for the second-consecutive season. He helped lead the Spartans to the NCAA Sweet 16 this season, gathering many postseason honors in the process, including being named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the Team's MVP. A co-captain, Neitzel has also been visible in the community, volunteering his time at numerous functions. In the classroom, Neitzel was a second-team Academic All-American this season and has been an Academic All-Big Ten honoree each of the last three seasons. He graduated in May with a degree in interdisciplinary humanities. Wulff, a captain of the Spartans' women's basketball team, had her best season on the hardwood for MSU, notching career highs in every statistical category, but her impact on this year's squad was not limited to numbers on a stat sheet. She earned the Spartan Character Award at the team's year-end banquet for her leadership on and off the court. In addition, off the court, Wulff volunteered at numerous community events and also shined in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big Ten accolades this spring. She graduated in May with a degree in kinesiology. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university's list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected. All of the Sportsmanship Award honorees have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, theses student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
