Michigan State Will Open 2008 Old Spice Classic Against Maryland

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's basketball team will open the 2008 Old Spice Classic against the Maryland Terrapins on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. The eight-team tournament will be held on Thanksgiving weekend at the Milk House at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla. The winner of the Michigan State-Maryland contest will face the winner of the game between Oklahoma State and Gonzaga. Other first round games include Tennessee against Siena and Wichita State against Georgetown. Of the eight teams in the tournament, seven qualified for postseason play in 2007-08, including five in the NCAA Tournament with two advancing to the Sweet 16. Michigan State, Gonzaga, Georgetown and Tennessee have all been projected in the top 15 by various preseason rankings. Michigan State and Maryland last met in the championship game of the 2006 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in New York, with the Terrapins claiming a close 62-60 victory. This will be the fifth straight season that MSU and Maryland have played in the same early season tournament, although the two teams did not meet in the 2004 BB&T Classic, the 2005 Maui Invitational or the 2007 CBE Classic. The Spartans lead the all-time series, 2-1, with their most recent victory coming in the 2003 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. Semifinal games will be played on Friday, Nov. 28, with the final day of games taking place on Sunday, Nov. 30. All 12 games in the tournament will be televised by ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.
