Michigan State released its 2017-18 men’s basketball schedule on Wednesday. The slate features 17 teams that appeared in the 2017 postseason, including 11 opponents that played in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. In addition, six opponents are ranked in either the Sporting News, ESPN or CBS Sports Preseason Top 25. The Spartans will add one more non-conference opponent at a later date.
Eleven opponents appeared in the 2017 NCAA Tournament including non-conference opponents Arkansas, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Oregon and conference foes Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Oakland participated in the 2017 NIT, while Stony Brook was in the CBI and Houston Baptist played in the CIT. In total, MSU could play up to 12 games in 2017-18 against 2017 NCAA Tournament participants and 20 of its 31 regular-season games against 2017 postseason teams.
In the preseason, MSU is ranked No. 2 by Sporting News, No. 3 by ESPN and No. 4 by CBS, while Duke (SN-3, ESPN-5, CBS-1), North Carolina (11, 7, 12), Minnesota (10, 15, 14), Notre Dame (16, 21, 13), Northwestern (24, 20, 15) and Purdue (23, -, 24) are also ranked.
In conference play, the Spartans will play Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers and Wisconsin twice, while hosting Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State and Purdue, and traveling to Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern and Ohio State. The Spartans will play a pair of conference games in the middle of the non-conference slate in early December, hosting Nebraska (Dec. 3) and traveling to Rutgers (Dec. 5). After the conclusion of the non-conference schedule, Big Ten action resumes on January 4 with MSU hosting Maryland.
The 2018 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will be held in New York, New York, from February 28 to March 4, one week earlier than in past years.
