Big Ten Releases 2015-16 Conference Slate

Spartans set for nine Big Ten matchups in Breslin, while traveling to in-state foe Michigan.

Complete 2015-16 Schedule

EAST LANSING, Michigan - The Michigan State men's basketball conference schedule was announced on Thursday by the Big Ten office. The Spartans will play five home-and-homes this season (Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Wisconsin), four only in East Lansing (Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska) and four only on the road (Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue).

After closing out the non-conference schedule at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on Dec. 22 against Oakland, Michigan State plays on the road for three of its first four league games. For the first time since 2007, the Spartans open Big Ten play with a trip to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes on Dec. 29. MSU stays on the road over New Year’s to face off against Minnesota on Jan. 2 in Minneapolis. This marks the second time in three seasons and the fifth in the last 10 seasons where MSU has opened conference play with two road games.

Illinois comes into the Breslin Center on Jan. 7 to kick off the conference-home season for the Spartans. MSU and the Fighting Illini split last year’s series, with both winning on the road.

After a contest at Penn State (Jan. 10), the Spartans host three of the next four in East Lansing. Game two against Iowa falls on Jan. 14, leading into the rematch of the 2015 Big Ten Tournament title game in Madison versus Wisconsin (Jan. 17). The Spartans will then play Nebraska and Maryland in front of the Izzone on Jan. 20 and 23, respectively.

The year’s lone contest against Northwestern will be in Evanston (Jan. 28) before MSU closes out January at home against Rutgers (Jan. 31). The Spartans welcomed one of the newest additions to the Big Ten last season by downing the Scarlett Knights, 71-51, in Piscataway.

February opens with a pair of away matchups, beginning at Michigan (Feb. 6) and then at Purdue (Feb. 9). MSU is currently on a three-game win streak against the Wolverines, while it has not lost to the Boilermakers since Feb. 27, 2011. This is the first time MSU and UM will play just once in the regular season since 2008.

Indiana comes to East Lansing on Valentine’s Day before the Badgers make the trip across Lake Michigan on Feb. 18. Two of the last four games will feature Ohio State (Feb. 23) in Columbus and (March 5/6) at home. The contests against the Buckeyes are broken up by a home matchup against the Nittany Lions on Feb. 28 and a road trip to Rutgers on March 2.

MSU will play a pair of home exhibition games against Northern Michigan (Nov. 4) and Ferris State (Nov. 9) prior to opening the regular-season on Nov. 13 against Florida Atlantic.
