EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State menís basketball team is ranked second in the preseason ESPN/USA Today coaches Top 25, released Thursday afternoon. Defending-national champion Connecticut tops the rankings, receiving nine of the 31 first place votes. MSU received eight first-place ballots.

Eight of Michigan Stateís 1999-2000 opponents are ranked in the poll, including Connecticut (#1), North Carolina (5), Ohio State (6), Arizona (9), Kansas (11), Kentucky (12), Illinois (18) and Purdue (21). In addition, MSU could face either DePaul (20) or Texas (22) in the Puerto Rico Shootout.

The Spartans opened the 1998-99 season ranked 4th in the ESPN/USA Today Poll. After finishing the season with a 33-5 record and a trip to the Final Four, MSU ranked third in the final poll of the season.

Michigan State will open the exhibition season on Fri., Nov. 5 against the California All-Stars at 7:30 p.m. in the Breslin Center. The regular season will begin on Mon., Nov. 22 when the Spartans host Toledo at 7:30 p.m. in the Breslin Center.
