EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State basketball program will retire the jersey (#24) of former All-American Shawn Respert at halftime of this Saturday's (Nov. 28) championship game of the Coca Cola Spartan Classic.

Respert closed out his career and still remains the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,531 points, good for the No. 2 spot on the Big Ten's all-time list. A native of Detroit, Respert ranks as the conference's all-time point producer in league games with 1,545. He still holds the school's career marks in field goals (866), three-point field goals (331) and free throw percentage (.857).

As a senior in 1994-95, Respert was a first-team All-America selection as chosen by both the Associated Press and the United States Basketball Writers Association after leading the Big Ten in scoring in both overall (25.6 ppg) and conference (25.5 ppg) action. The recipient of the Big Ten Silver Basketball Award, symbolic of the conference's outstanding player, Respert was tabbed by The Sporting News as that publication's National Player of the Year. In addition, he was among the five finalists for both the Naismith and Wooden Awards.

In addition to his career marks, Respert holds the Breslin Arena single-game scoring record with 43 points against Minnesota on Feb. 23, 1994.

Since graduating in 1995, Respert has spent three years in the professional ranks with Milwaukee, Toronto and finished the 1997-98 season with the Dallas Mavericks.

"Shawn was a player who came to MSU without a lot of acclaim and honors from his high school days, but, through hard work and dedication, he became of the most prolific scorers the Big Ten Conference has ever seen," said MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo, then an assistant with the Spartan program when Respert played. "He is a person who can be pointed to when talking about what drive and persistence can do for you. Shawn is very deserving of this honor."

The Coca Cola Spartan Classic championship game will take place approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the consolation contest which will get underway at 6:00 p.m. Joining MSU in this year's Coca Cola Spartan Classic Field will be Central Florida, Western Michigan and North Carolina Wilmington.
