No. 2 Michigan State Hosts Savannah State on Sunday
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State’s men’s basketball team closes out the 2017 calendar year on Sunday, Dec. 31, hosting Savannah State at the Breslin Center. Tipoff is slated for noon.
The game will be shown live on the Big Ten Network, with Greg Amsinger will call the play-by-play and Jon Crispin will serve as the color analyst.
The Spartans are coming off a 111-61 win over Cleveland State on Friday night, the third-straight game MSU has scored at least 100 points. It was the third-straight game Michigan State scored at least 100 points and is the first time the Spartans have scored 100 points in three-straight games since doing so to open the 2004-05 season.
Michigan State, ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press and USA Today Top 25 Coaches polls, improved to 13-1 overall with its 12th-straight win. It is the longest win streak for the Spartans since opening the 2015-16 season with 13-straight wins.
MSU scored 63 points in the first half in the Cleveland State win. The 63 points at the half marked the first time MSU had scored at least 60 in a half since scoring 60 against Alcorn State on Dec. 13, 2008 in a 118-60 win. The 63 points are the most in a half during the Tom Izzo Era.
The 111 points matched MSU’s total in a 111-68 win over Cleveland State in December 1994 and the most since scoring 114 against Michigan in 2014.
Sophomore guard Joshua Langford scored 23 points, hitting 9-of-11 shots from the floor, to lead the Spartans, who had all five starters in double figures. Sophomore forward Nick Ward had his third double-double of the season with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while sophomore guard Miles Bridges added 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, freshman forward Jaren Jackson Jr. had 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks and sophomore guard Cassius Winston added 11 points and four assists.
Michigan State returns back to Big Ten Conference play next week, hosting Maryland on Thursday, Jan. 4 at the Breslin Center.
