EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State football team held its 13th spring practice Tuesday afternoon, splitting time on the outdoor practice fields at the Duffy Daugherty Building and Spartan Stadium.
Prior to practice, Spartan head coach Mark Dantonio talked about the second scrimmage that was held last Saturday, and also what he's looking to get out of the last week of spring ball.
"Going into practice 13, as I said to our players today, this is the time when you start to gain ground," Dantonio said. "You gotta finish. Sometimes that's not as easy to do as it is to just say, but we have to have a great practice today and complete our circles here.
"There's all kind of different situations we continue to work on daily that we just sort of check off. So there's a couple of different things that we'll do today that we haven't done all spring. That's the beauty of spring practice: you have an opportunity to work on different aspects of the football game itself, and the formations you would see, or the situations you would see. We have a couple that we haven't done yet, so we'll explore those opportunities."
The Spartans are coming off a hard-fought scrimmage in which the offense scored a last-minute touchdown to edge the defense, 28-26.
"I thought it was a great scrimmage - the best scrimmage we've had here since sometime last year," said Dantonio. "You could make a case going either way, and usually that's the way things go. It was 1's vs. 1's, 2's vs. 2's and 3's vs. 3's. The 3's didn't count in the scoring. So it went down to the end, just like you like it.
"It was intense, guys were going after it...It wasn't a finesse-type scrimmage, it was a physical scrimmage. But at the same time, I thought the throwing that was done was done pretty well. On the other side of the ball, I thought our defense played very well at times, as usual."
The annual spring game player draft is set for Wednesday at 2 p.m., while the 14th practice of the spring is scheduled for Thursday. MSU will conclude its 15 spring practices with the Green-White spring game on Saturday, April 20 at 2:30 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. Admission is free.
