EAST LANSING, Mich. - Three Spartans - senior linebacker Max Bullough, senior cornerback Darqueze Dennard and junior defensive end Marcus Rush - have been named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America announced on Thursday. The award is given annually to the defensive player of the year in college football.
Michigan State is one just seven schools, along with Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Texas and USC, to have at least three players land on the Nagurski Trophy Watch List.
This marks the first national award watch list appearance for Rush. A two-year letterwinner, Rush has started every game of his Spartan career (27 straight) at defensive end and has 96 tackles, including 19.5 for losses (79 yards) and 6.0 sacks (44 yards), in 27 career games.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and media last season. He ranked second among MSU defensive linemen with 38 tackles and finished fourth on the team with 7.5 tackles for loss (34 yards), including 2.0 sacks (21 yards). He also tied for the team lead with five quarterback hurries and had five pass break-ups.
Rush was a Freshman All-America choice by the FWAA and Sporting News in 2011 after he collected 58 tackles, including 12 for losses (45 yards) and four sacks (23 sacks).
