EAST LANSING, Mich. - Fourth-year Michigan State head coach Nick Saban welcomed 31 first-year players to campus for physicals Monday as the Spartans prepare to open preseason football camp. The newcomers will hit the practice field for the first time Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., with a second workout scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
Coach Saban announced Monday that signee Ashley Beals, a 6-foot, 185-pound wide receiver from Toronto, has elected to remain at Northern Secondary High School as a 13th grader. Beals intends to enroll at Michigan State next year.
Nine newcomers ran 4.6 or better 40s during Monday's testing in Spartan Stadium.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the speed and skill level of this class," Saban said, "especially with that many guys running in the 4.5-4.6 range.
"We're looking forward to getting down to business tomorrow. Everybody's anxious to get out on the practice field."
Veteran players report for physicals Thursday, Aug. 6. The first combined team workouts are slated for Saturday, Aug. 8. Media/Photo and Family Fun Day are scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 9.
Michigan State opens the 1998 season Aug. 29 against Colorado State at 4 p.m. in Spartan Stadium.
