Senior linebacker Greg Jones

On Coach Dantonio saying the strength of the defense is the linebackers...
"I feel that's a pretty big statement. It takes a whole defense to win games, not just linebackers...I'm very humbled by that, being one of the leaders on the linebacking corps, but I feel like we do have a lot of guys that can step up and lead."

On Coach Dantonio remarking that Greg is the leader of the defense and if that adds any pressure...
"A little bit, but not too much...I have guys to help me out, like Eric Gordon and Chris Norman. I'll try and do what I can do, but ultimately, I have to step up if my name is called."

On playing with Eric Gordon his entire career...
"We actually played the same position at one point in time, and that was really rough. We were battling, and didn't talk as much. Now I feel like he's one of the better friends I have on the team. I room with him before every game, and we have a lot of fun together now. It's been a tremendous friendship. I feel like the friendship we have will go on after football."

On the seniors providing leadership to the freshmen...
"We're just trying to help those guys out. Those guys have a lot of questions, and sometimes they don't really know when to ask a question in front of the whole entire group, or in front of (linebackers) Coach (Mike) Tressel, which is perfectly fine. We want to help them as much as we possibly can."

On any young linebackers that might make an impact...
"Max Bullough has stepped up. TyQuan Hammock, he's been a little bit injured, but he's learning and he's still stepping up. And William Gholston. Coming in, he has a lot of expectations, and I feel like that's always hard as a freshman. I didn't have that, so I had it kind of easy, coming in underneath the radar. I feel like having that spotlight on him, he's done pretty well. I think the best thing he's done is that he wants to learn. He's coming and asking questions. He's not afraid to ask me questions or Coach Tressel, so he's doing the best he can do."

Senior linebacker Eric Gordon

On the linebackers being the strength of the defense...
"I think it's a huge part of the defense. We definitely have the experience there. We have the talent, we have the depth, we have two incoming freshmen (Max Bullough and William Gholston) who are going to be great players. But it's a team game. We definitely have our front four that we rely on. We can be as good as our front four, so we definitely need them."

On playing alongside Greg Jones...
"It's definitely been a great experience. Greg does stuff that I can't do; I definitely learn stuff from him. And I think he learns stuff from me. But one of the main things is our communication with each other. If one of us doesn't know it, the other one does...We can kind of read each other on the field."

On his expectations for this year...
"This year I'm going to take it one game at a time. Obviously, we all want to win the Big Ten Championship and go to the Rose Bowl. I just want to have a great senior year and not look past a game...If you take one game at a time, one play at a time, we'll have a great year."

Junior safety Trenton Robinson

On the team's mindset heading into camp...
"The older guys, I feel like we know our stuff. We have some work to do because we haven't been on the field in awhile and the younger guys are coming along, but it just looked good (yesterday). We're always flying around the first day of camp I'm sure, but it just looked good, the enthusiasm (was there), everybody is excited and can't wait."

On the offseason...
"I worked on getting bigger. But as a secondary, we worked on our chemistry and just being together as one unit. We all have to be there together, and know that that man is for me if something happens."

On communication within the secondary...
"That's one of the most important things. As a safety, me and (Marcus) Hyde have to communicate to our corners, our outside linebackers, so it's real important. If we don't have communication, it's probably going to be a busted play."

Senior wide receiver Mark Dell

On his last season...
"It feels like yesterday it was my freshman year and I was out here with (Brian) Hoyer and everybody. Time goes by fast. Being a senior, I feel like it's taking a new responsibility just being a leader for the younger guys, and that's what I'm going to try to do."

On summing conditioning and the mindset going into camp...
"I feel like the summer and conditioning has been great. Everybody is on the same page, everyone is hungry. There's an aura about the team that we're not going to be let down. Last year, we were all disappointed by the season. We all came together and realized we can't have another season like that. We're too good to do that. The sky is the limit for all of us. We have a lot of skill guys coming back, and the defense is looking a lot better."

On his improvements going into this season...
"I just feel like I've matured a lot...It started with the offseason. I'm doing a lot more with technique and not just catching the ball. You have to look at the whole view of playing receiver. It's not just catching the ball, it's working on the little things, like getting out of breaks and little technique things that I've taken strides in getting better in."

On the wide receivers...
"We have a lot of weapons. With B.J. (Cunningham), Keshawn (Martin) and Keith (Nichol), and some of the other guys, it's going to make it difficult, because you really can't lock into one receiver. We're versatile and have a lot of different things. But we have room for improvement. We're not perfect. We just have to keep making strides to be the best that we can."

Sophomore tailback Larry Caper

On entering his second year...
"Kirk is our leader (on offense), but I'm just looking to provide some stability to the running back position that we didn't have last year. Having me and Edwin (Baker), we feel like we should be one of the best tandems in the Big Ten."

On competing against Edwin Baker...
"We have great competition because it makes you better every day, and by doing that, it will make our team better."

On what he wants to improve on for 2010...
"Gain more yards after contact. I'm more of a bruiser back than Edwin, Edwin is more of a shifty back, but yards after contact for me."

Junior wide receiver Keith Nichol

On the transition from quarterback to wide receiver...
"The transition has been really smooth. I have been able to get a lot of coaching from Coach (Don) Treadwell and all of the other coaches. It has come extremely naturally. I feel that the coaches are happy with what they see, but at the same time that is because they see the potential more than the results. There is a lot of work ahead of me, but I am excited about the future."

On what he has worked on this offseason with the quarterbacks...
"We have worked on running crisp routes. I just want to be the most reliable guy on the field. When they need a guy to go to, I want to be that guy. Certainly, we have a wide range of receivers. Lots of guys have been doing really well and we have a lot of depth at this position."

On filling the void of Blair White...
"Those are going to be shoes that are hard to fill. I don't know if one person will be able to do that this year. Certainly, we would like someone to, but he is a guy that really stepped it up last year. Hopefully all of us can equal one Blair White, that's how good I think he is. That's just a testimony to him and it isn't to downplay anyone on this team. Blair was a great player and we have some shoes to fill there."

On the team's mentality going into the season...
"We are just looking to play together and finish games. So many games slipped away from us last year. But, at the same time, we are forgetting about last year. Being a .500 squad, going 6-6 isn't good enough around here. We have a lot to improve upon, but we are excited and we are really close as a team. We just need to keep growing."
