Program-Record 27 MSU Football Players Earn Academic All-Big Ten Honors
Six Spartans collect Academic All-Big Ten accolades for third-straight season part of second-straight season setting new program record.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A program-record 27 Michigan State football players have been named to the 2017 Academic All-Big Ten Team: senior offensive center Brian Allen, redshirt-freshman offensive lineman Matt Allen, redshirt-freshman offensive lineman AJ Arcuri, redshirt-freshman defensive lineman Drew Beesley, junior linebacker Byron Bullough, redshirt-freshman fullback Reid Burton, redshirt-freshman offensive lineman Luke Campbell, redshirt-freshman wide receiver Cam Chambers, sophomore offensive lineman Cole Chewins, redshirt-freshman placekicker Matt Coghlin, redshirt-freshman quarterback Messiah deWeaver, sophomore defensive back David Dowell, senior linebacker Chris Frey, junior offensive lineman Chase Gianacakos, junior punter Jake Hartbarger, senior tight end Hussien Kadry, sophomore quarterback Brian Lewerke, junior fullback Collin Lucas, senior wide receiver Brock Makaric, junior safety Grayson Miller, junior safety Matt Morrissey, redshirt-freshman defensive back Corey Pryor, redshirt-freshman linebacker Dante Razzano, senior offensive lineman Jeremy Schram, junior tight end Matt Sokol, junior wide receiver Brandon Sowards and junior safety Khari Willis.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of November 1 for fall sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Michigan State’s list of honorees includes 11 multi-year selections. Brian Allen, Bullough, Frey, Hartbarger, Morrissey and Sowards are featured on the academic all-conference team for the third year in a row, while Chewins, Gianacakos, Miller, Sokol and Willis made the honor roll for the second-straight season.
In 11 seasons under Mark Dantonio, student-athletes have been named Academic All-Big Ten 163 times, including the second-straight season with the highest in program history as part of three of four highest single-season marks in program history (record 27 in 2017; 22 in 2016; 17 in 2013 was fourth highest). Before last season’s 22, the previous single-season record was 18 in 2005.
