Assistant Coach

First Season

On August 20, 2008, Bart Lower was officially named to the Michigan State men's golf staff as an assistant coach.

A native of Michigan, Lower comes to the Spartan men's golf program after more than 10 years as a golf instructor in the mid-Michigan area. Most recently, he was a teaching professional at the Forest Akers Golf Courses on the Michigan State campus.

"I am extremely excited to have Bart join the coaching staff," said Spartan head men's golf coach Sam Puryear. "He brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience on the golf course. Bart will be an exceptional motivator and mentor for the guys on the team. I look forward to working with him to help expand our reach with the Spartan men's golf alumni and the entire community of Spartans across the country."

As a former Division I collegiate player and two-time contestant on The Golf Channel's "The Big Break," Lower brings a strong mix of technical knowledge of the golf swing, equipment and course management, as well as a proven methodology for preparing one's game to compete at the highest level and under extreme pressures.

"When Coach Puryear extended me the offer to become part of the Spartan Golf Program, it was, without question, my proudest moment as a professional," said Lower. "Having the opportunity to not only be part of Michigan State Athletics, but to also learn from and work side-by-side with Coach Puryear is the perfect environment for an assistant coach. To have a mentor that has not only accomplished so much in life, but one that knows firsthand what it takes to win an NCAA Championship is absolutely incredible."

Lower began his collegiate career at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., where he played under four-time National Coach of the Year John Sadie.

"Coach Sadie had an incredible way of preparing our teams for competition," added Lower. "Our practices were structured in a way where we knew, without question, that we were working on the right things for our games. When it was time to compete, the team was always full of confidence and ready to go. It was a huge part of the recipe for our success. I look very much forward to bringing some of those same techniques to the Spartan program."

After three semesters at Huntingdon, Lower transferred back to the Michigan area, attending Eastern Michigan University and playing for two-time MAC Coach of the Year Bruce Cunningham.

"Playing Division 1 golf at Eastern was an awesome time in my life," said Lower. "When I look back, competing against players like Luke Donald, Ben Curtis and Jon Mills created experiences that I draw upon now in my day-to-day instruction and while improving my own game."

"My wife Niki, our son Rory, our daughter Ryann and I are incredibly excited and very grateful to be part of the Michigan State University family," expressed Lower. "Just like Coach Puryear, my goals here are to help make sure we are by far the most well prepared team in the country. I want us to be able to step to the first tee and know in our hearts that we deserve the win more than any of the other teams in the field. We will have prepared, practiced and trained harder and smarter than all of our competition."

Lower graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He passed the PGA Players ability test in spring 2008 and currently is pursuing his Class "A" PGA certification. He has appeared as a guest on several programs on The Golf Channel, including "Fore Inventors Only" and "Top Shelf Wednesdays."
