Spartans Go 2-0 on Day One of the B1G Match Play Championship
MSU will next meet Penn State Saturday morning.
PALM COAST, Florida -
The Michigan State men’s golf team defeated Rutgers and Indiana on Friday in day one of the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. The Spartans topped Rutgers, 5-1, and then Indiana, 5-1, at the par-72, 7,183-yard Conservatory Course.
“It was a really solid day for our guys,” MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. “They narrowed their misses well the last couple of days and were sharp in all facets today. We have a totally different challenge tomorrow with a new course and we are going to have to adjust well to have a chance to play for a championship.”
Kaleb Johnson, Michael Sharp, Charlie Green and Austin Jenner all won their opening round matches in the victory over Rutgers. Johnson defeated Toks Pedro, 4 & 3; Sharp defeated Chris Gotterup, 4 & 3; Green defeated Tony Jing, 3 & 2; and Jenner topped Jack Panagos, 2 & 1. Andrew Walker and James Piot both halved their respective matches.
The Spartans defeated Indiana in round two with wins by Johnson (5 & 3); Sharp (4 & 3); Walker (5 & 3); Piot (2 & 1) and Jenner (7 & 6). Green fell in his match, 6 & 5.
The Spartans will meet the East Division’s top-seeded team, Penn State, Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Ocean Course. The championship matches will take place at 1:30 p.m.
Championship Match: Team 1 East vs. Team 1 West (Ocean Course)
3rd and 4th place match: Team 2 East vs. Team 2 West (Ocean Course)
5th and 6th place match: Team 3 East vs. Team 3 West (Ocean Course)
7th and 8th place match: Team 4 East vs. Team 4 West (Conservatory Course)
9th and 10th place match: Team 5 East vs. Team 5 West (Conservatory Course)
11th and 12th place match: Team 6 East vs. Team 6 West (Conservatory Course)
13th and 14th place match: Team 7 East vs. Team 7 West (Conservatory Course)
