GREENSBORO, Ga. - The Linger Longer Invitational was shortened to 36 holes today, as the Michigan State men's golf team finished 10th with a 20-over par 596 at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation. Senior Matthew Moseley tied for 10th at 1-under par 143 (74-69). Inclement weather over the past two days forced the final round to be cancelled.
"While we would have liked to finish all 54 holes, we were happy with our second round and some solid individual performances against an elite field," said Spartan head coach Casey Lubahn. "We will use this experience and take the lessons we learned down the home stretch."
The Spartans opened Saturday with an 18-over par 306 in the first round, and finished with a 2-over par 290 in the second round split between yesterday and today.
Moseley has been the top Spartan in six of MSU's eight stroke play events this season, posting his sixth top-10 finish. Moseley had a team-best 10 birdies, and his second round 3-under par 69 was his sixth under par round of the season.
Freshman Mitch Rutledge tied for 28th with a 3-over par 147 (76-71). Senior Dan Ellis (76-77) and junior Carson Castellani (80-73) were among a group tied for 54th at 9-over par 153. Junior Gareth Blease rounded out the Spartan lineup in 78th at 18-over par 164 (86-78).
No. 2 Alabama won the tournament with a 16-under par 560, finishing 16 shots ahead of host Kennesaw State. The field included six teams in the top-40 nationally, including four teams in the top-15. The Crimson Tide's Cory Whitsett finished first individually by one shot with a 7-under par 137.
The Spartans return to action on April 13-14 at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City.
