EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's three-round 303-296-295=894 placed the Spartans in sixth place overall in the 18-team Southeast Louisiana University Mardi Gras Invitational which ended Tuesday in Mandeville, La. Michigan State finished just two shots out of fifth place and only eight strokes away from fourth place.
Senior John Ehrgott (Peoria, Ill.) led the Spartans with a 68-76-70=214, good for a fifth-place individual finish. Ehrgottis first-round 68 is the best single round of his collegiate career, while his three-round 214 is three strokes lower than his previous best tournament. He was named to the all-tournament team for his two-under-par effort. Ehrgott was one of only six golfers under par and was just three strokes off the pace set by medalist Lane Pippin of Mississippi.
Ehrgott received solid support from junior Matt Riegel (East Lansing), who claimed 12th individually with a 72-72-75=219. Riegel also enjoyed a career-best tournament.
Junior Alberto Quevedo (Canary Islands, Spain, T-48th), sophomore Chad Quinn (Sylvania, Ohio, T-66th) and junior Matt Pumford (Saginaw, T-78th) wrapped up the Spartan finishers.
