April 2, 2004
LAREDO, Texas - Michigan State men's golf sits in 10th place after the first two rounds of the 53rd annual Border Olympics on Friday, April 2. The Spartans shot a two-round total of 587 at the Laredo Country Club, including an opening-round 297 and a 290 in the afternoon session. "In the first round, we were getting to know the golf course; but in the second round, we played pretty solid," said MSU head coach Mark Hankins. "We have five decent scores on the day. The No. 1 thing from today was to get back into competition. It was a long day out there; we definitely played quite a bit better in the afternoon than the morning." SMU leads par 72, 7,125-yard, 17-team field with a 558, while Baylor is second with a 569. Individually, junior Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) paces the Spartans in a tie for sixth place. Ruthkoski shot back-to-back rounds of 70 for a 4-under 140.
The final round of the Border Olympics will be played on Saturday, April 3, with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
