Men’s Golf in Fifth After 18 Holes at the Hawkeye Invitational
James Piot and Michael Sharp are both tied for fifth place.
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Michigan State men’s golf team shot a 1-over-par 289 in the opening round of the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday afternoon at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa. Iowa State leads the tournament at 8-under-par 280, followed by Kansas State at 6-under-par 282, with Iowa and Minnesota both in third at 3-under-par 285.
Michael Sharp and James Piot led the Spartans in the opening round at the 7,239-yard course as they both fired 2-under-par 70s and are tied for fifth place. Sharp had a bogey-free round with 16 pars and two birdies. Piot was 1-under-par on the front nine and then sandwiched a pair of birdies around a bogey on the back nine for his 2-under-par 70.
Sharp and Piot were two of 16 golfers in the 75-man field to shoot under par.
Charlie Green is tied for 30th after a 2-over-par 74.
A.J. Varekois, who is playing individually, shot an 8-over-par 80.
Kansas State’s Jeremy Gandon leads the tournament after a 6-under-par 66.
While inclement weather is expected on Saturday, round two of the 13-team tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET with the third round following immediately thereafter.
