IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Michigan State men's golf team finished eighth this weekend at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational, hosted by the University of Iowa at Finkbine Golf Course. The Spartans shot a 3-round total of 22-over par 886 (298-294-294), including a final round 6-over 294, which was the fourth lowest score in the field today.
"Obviously a tough weekend for us," said MSU head coach Casey Lubahn. "No one had their best stuff. All part of our games were a little off and what you saw were some poor scores. We played a lot better today though and hopefully that prepares us for next week."
Junior Matthew Moseley is the top Spartan this weekend, tying for 18th while shooting a 2-over par 218 (73-73-72). Moseley shot the low round of the day for MSU on Sunday with his even par 72. It was Moseley's fifth top-20 finish of the season.
Junior Dave Ellis carded a 4-over par 220 (75-72-73) and tied for 26th overall. He had a team-best 11 birdies this weekend, and was best in the field on the par-3s (2-under). His twin brother Dan tied for 36th with an 8-over par 224 (74-76-74).
Rounding out the Spartan lineup, senior Chris Mory tied for 39th at 10-over par 226 (76-75-75), while classmate Jimmy Dewling, making his first appearance in the lineup this season, tied for 46th at 12-over 228 (79-74-75).
No. 27 Iowa held off Iowa State in the final round, winning the team title by two shots with a 24-under par 840. Iowa State's Nate McCoy ran away with the individual crown, shooting a 14-under par 202, topping the field by six strokes.
The Spartans return to action next weekend for the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
