Men's Golf Finishes Ninth at Kepler Invitational
April 19, 1998
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team jumped to ninth place at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate Sunday, carding a final-round 292 to finish at 307-304-292=903. Only second-place Northwestern had a better round than the Spartans Sunday, posting a 288 on the final day. Host Ohio State finished atop the 16-team field, shooting 280-285-298=863 on its home links. Junior Matt Riegel (East Lansing) led MSU, posting a career-best tournament score of 76-72-70=218 to finish only eight strokes behind medalist Tee McCabe of Miami (Ohio). Riegel's two-under par 70 on Sunday also marked the lowest single round of his career. His previous career bests were 225 and 71, both at the 1996 Bradford Creek Classic. In addition, Riegel was the only MSU golfer to break par in any round of the tournament. Senior John Ehrgott (Peoria, Ill.) and sophomore Chad Quinn (Sylvania, Ohio) tied for 41st after finishing with identical 76-78-74=228 scorecards. Junior Rich Strozewski (Quincy) also had his best round of the tournament Sunday, striking a 74 to finish in a tie for 56th at 79-80-74=233. The Spartans will have next weekend off before heading to Ann Arbor for the Wolverine Invitational May 2-3. MSU will host the Big Ten Championship May 8-10 at Forest Akers West.
