Men's Golf Climbs Leaderboard At Day Two of the NCAA East Regional

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team carded a five-under 279 today in the second round of the NCAA East Regional at the Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Spartans are currently tied for 10th, the final NCAA Championship qualifying position. MSU's round was the fifth-lowest of the day and their second-best total of the season.
Freshman Graham Baillargeon continues to pace the Spartans, posting a two-under par 69 to move him up into a tie for 16th at three-under for the tournament. Starting on the back nine, he posted an error-free two-under 33, and continued his strong play by birdieing the first and second holes. However, he would drop a stroke on each of the next two holes and par out for his 69. Baillargeon's four birdies today, brought his week total to a team-high nine.
Sophomore Jack Newman posted the low round of the day for MSU with a three-under 68. Newman is now tied for 26th at two-under for the regional, including his opening round one-over 72. His card featured only one bogey and contained four birdies, including two of the four par-fives. Newman now has seven birdies over his 36 holes.
Matching Baillargeon's score today, junior Randy Hutchison bounced back to fire a two-under 69, bringing him to two-over for the regional. He improved 43 spots in the standings, into a tie for 64th. Hutchison had a team-high five birdies today, including his final hole, No. 9. Freshman Payne Gniewek is also two-over through two rounds, after a two-over 73 today. His round was highlighted today by a string of three birdies over a four hole stretch from the second to the fifth holes.
Senior Ryan Brehm shot a four-over 75 today in his second round to fall to five-over for the week. Brehm was inconsistent all day but was able to post four birdies.
MSU began the regional yesterday with an opening round one-over par 285, which saw them in a three-way tie for 14th.
Georgia, the region's No. 1 seed, is continuing to pull away from the rest of the field at 32-under par 536 (265-271). No. 17-seed Augusta State held onto second at 13-under par 555 (273-282), while sixth-seeded Auburn and No. 16 UC Irvine are tied for third at 10-under.
UAB's Zach Sucher fired a tournament-low nine-under 62 to takeover the individual lead at 11-under. Round one co-leader Hudson Swafford of Georgia is second at nine-under and his teeammate, Russell Henley is third at eight-under.
The Spartans will tee off in tomorrow's final round, off the 10th hole, beginning at 8:05 a.m. ET. MSU will be paired with Duke and Middle Tennessee State
The top-10 finishers from each of the three regions will advance to the 111th NCAA Championship, held on May 20-23 on the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
