EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf program opened up the 2011-12 season, by finishing second at the 2011 Fossum Invitational this weekend at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Spartans were overtaken Sunday by IUPUI, who shot a 2-under par 286 today, for the tournament title.

"We just didn't get anything going this weekend," said Casey Lubahn about his Spartan head coaching debut. "We struggled to make birdies on the easy holes and that puts you behind the eight ball on this course. There are some things we need to address between now and our next event as we continue the process of trying to get better, one day at a time.

"I would like to thank the entire staff at Forest Akers for their hard work and support this week. Also, thank yous need to go out to our administration and staff for helping Michigan State put on this prestigious tournament."

IUPUI finished the weekend at 11-over par 875 (300-289-286), four shots clear of the Spartans. MSU shot matching rounds of 5-over par 293 in all three rounds, totaling 15-over 879. Oakland University held on for third at 28-over par 892 (291-299-302).

Seniors Dan Ellis and Chris Mory led the Spartans this weekend, finishing among a group tied for third at 2-over par 218. It was the best career finish for Ellis (72-72-74), who was solid all weekend, tying for the tournament lead with 38 pars. Mory (71-74-73) had his fourth career top-5 finish and has placed among the top-25 in each of his last six tournaments, dating back to the 2011 spring season.

Senior Dave Ellis, playing as an individual, also posted his best placement of his career, tying for eighth at 3-over par 219 (75-70-74). Ellis was impressive on the par-4s this weekend, playing them at a tournament-best 4-under par. Another individual, junior Matthew Moseley, was alone in 11th at 4-over par 220 (72-71-77).

Freshman McCormick Clouser made his collegiate debut this weekend in the Spartan competitive lineup. Clouser, who matched Dan Ellis with a tournament-best 38 pars, tied for 12th at 5-over par 221 (75-74-72). Fellow freshman Patrick Colburn also debuted this weekend, tying for 18th with a 7-over par 223 (75-73-75).

Sophomore Carson Castellani rounded out the MSU competitive five, improving each round to shoot a 15-over par 231 (80-77-74) and tie for 44th.

Three other Spartans competed as individuals this weekend. Senior Jimmy Dewling tied for 23rd at 8-over par 224 (76-72-76). Junior Will Morris had his best career finish, tying for 26th, after shooting a tournament- and career-low 5-under 67 today for a weekend total of 9-over 225 (78-80-67). Sophomore Gareth Blease carded a 11-over 227 (75-81-71) to tie for 30th.
