Sept. 4, 2011
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf program opened up the 2011-12 season, by finishing second at the 2011 Fossum Invitational this weekend at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Spartans were overtaken Sunday by IUPUI, who shot a 2-under par 286 today, for the tournament title.
"We just didn't get anything going this weekend," said Casey Lubahn about his Spartan head coaching debut. "We struggled to make birdies on the easy holes and that puts you behind the eight ball on this course. There are some things we need to address between now and our next event as we continue the process of trying to get better, one day at a time.
"I would like to thank the entire staff at Forest Akers for their hard work and support this week. Also, thank yous need to go out to our administration and staff for helping Michigan State put on this prestigious tournament."
IUPUI finished the weekend at 11-over par 875 (300-289-286), four shots clear of the Spartans. MSU shot matching rounds of 5-over par 293 in all three rounds, totaling 15-over 879. Oakland University held on for third at 28-over par 892 (291-299-302).
