EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team concluded its fall schedule on Tuesday with a 13th place finish at The Invitational at The Ocean Course. The Spartans shot a 12-over par 300 today to finish the tournament at 55-over par 919 (312-307-300). Today's round was the eighth-lowest in the field.
"Obviously this ended the fall for us and we need to now go into the offseason focused," said head coach Casey Lubahn. "We need to do a better job of applying the lessons we have learned moving forward. We need to be incredibly more disciplined in everything we do in life over the next couple months, and I believe the results will show on the course. We have had good chemistry and have made a lot of good shots, but we just need to hone our craft, and I feel like we will."
Redshirt freshman Sean Friel led the Spartans for the second time this season. Friel, who returned to the lineup after a week off, tied for 41st with a 13-over par 229 (78-74-77). Sophomore Mitch Rutledge was second on the team, tying for 45th at 14-over par 230 (78-76-76). Rutledge has the lone eagle of the week for MSU, holing his second shot on the 395-yard, par-4 first hole.
Freshman Charlie Netzel had the best round for MSU today, posting a 1-over par 73. Steadily improving each score each round, Netzel ended the tournament at 17-over par 233 (81-79-73) and in a tie for 55th. Senior Carson Castellani posted a 19-over par 235 (75-78-82) to tie for 60th, while junior Jon Finley tied for 70th at 23-over par 239 (86-79-74). Finley, who also improved each day, led the Spartans with eight birdies this week.
The Spartans return to competition on Feb. 14-15 at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Bradenton, Fla.
