Sharp Named B1G Co-Golfer of the Week
Michael Sharp went 3-1 in helping the Spartans' claim a share of the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
EAST LANSING - Michigan State senior Michael Sharp has been named the Big Ten Co-Golfer of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Sharp is the Co-Golfer of the Week with Purdue’s Brian Carlson as both helped lead their teams to a share of the Big Ten Match Play Championship this past weekend.
Sharp helped the Spartans get off to a solid start at the Big Ten Match Play Championship as they went 2-0 on day one of the competition. Sharp won his two matches, topping Rutgers’ Chris Gotterup, 4 & 3, and then Indiana’s Brock Ochsenreiter, 4 & 3.
After falling to top-seeded Penn State in round three, the Spartans and Sharp bounced back in the final. Sharp edged Purdue’s Timmy Hildebrand, 5 & 3, in the championship match as the Spartans and Boilermakers tied for the title.
It marked the Spartans’ second Big Ten Match Play title in the last three seasons.
The weekly honor is the first of Sharp’s career and he’s the first Spartan to earn the award since Kaleb Johnson on Sept. 20, 2017.
Michigan State is back in action on February 24 in Houston at the Challenge at Champions vs. Penn State.
