March 22, 2012
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team will compete in its second stroke play tournament of the spring this weekend, traveling to the FAU Spring Break Championship. The three-day tournament, hosted by Florida Atlantic University at Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Fla., begins with 18 holes on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.
"With the wonderful weather in East Lansing, it has been a focused week of preparation for our guys," said Spartan head coach Casey Lubahn. "Qualifying has toughened us and we are looking to build a total team effort in at FAU."
The Spartan lineup remains the same for the second-straight tournament, as senior Chris Mory, juniors Dan Ellis, Dave Ellis and Matthew Moseley, and freshman McCormick Clouser, make the trip to Florida.
The field this weekend is comprised of Connecticut, DePaul, Florida Gulf Coast, No. 22 Florida State, Jacksonville State, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Minnesota, Murray State, Northern Illinois, Ohio State, South Florida and Xavier, in addition to FAU and MSU.
Dan Ellis continues to lead the Spartans this season, posting a 72.6 scoring average, while also gathering three top-5 and five top-15 finishes. Mory is second with a 73.1 stroke average and leads the team with 48 birdies. Mory has also posted three top-10 individual finishes.
Michigan State has posted four top-five finishes in its six stroke play events this season, including a tie for first at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, which concluded the fall. The Spartans have not lost to a Big Ten school in stroke play this season, beating Michigan twice (Wolverine Invitational and Inverness Intercollegiate), and also topping Ohio State and Penn State at the Inverness.
The Spartans return to Florida for the third time this spring, having played in the Big Ten Match Play Championship in early February and the Seminole Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Michigan State finished seventh in Tallahassee, led by the Ellis twins who tied for 25th overall.
