EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf head coach Casey Lubahn announced the team's 2013-14 schedule on Monday. The Spartans' track includes three courses that have hosted PGA Tour major championships, and one future U.S. Open host.
"One of the things we try to do every year is play the best competition on the best golf courses that also match up well with our strengths and academic priorities," said Lubahn. "I think this schedule is a nice complement in all facets. Our guys will enjoy competing in these nice events."
The season begins on Sept. 8-9 at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by Minnesota at Windsong Golf Course. The Spartans remain in-state for the second tournament, traveling to Ann Arbor for the Wolverine Intercollegiate on Sept. 16-17.
Michigan State will look to defend its title at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on Sept. 23-24 at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend. Last season, the Spartans held off Houston and UNC-Wilmington by one shot for the victory.
The Spartans close out the fall on three of the top courses in the country. On Oct. 6-8, MSU will travel to Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis., for the Erin Hills Intercollegiate, hosted by Marquette. Erin Hills will play host to the 2017 U.S. Open and also was the host site for the 2011 U.S. Amateur.
The following week, Michigan State will be at the IU/Crooked Stick Collegiate on Oct. 14-15 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. Crooked Stick hosted the 1991 PGA Championship, in addition to the 1993 U.S. Women's Open and the 2009 U.S. Senior Open.
The fall schedule concludes at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Resort in Kiawah Island, S.C. College of Charleston will hold The Invitational at the Ocean Course on Oct. 27-29. The Ocean Course hosted the 2012 PGA Championship and the 1991 Ryder Cup.
After The Green and The White Alumni Match at Grey Oaks Golf Club in Naples, Fla., on Feb. 8, the Spartans begin the spring schedule at the Big Ten Match Play Championship on Feb. 14-15. The sixth-annual event will be held at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. MSU had its best finish ever last season, finishing second.
Michigan State will host the Colleton River Collegiate on March 2-3 at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, S.C., before returning south for the Linger Longer Invitational on March 22-23 at Great Waters Golf Course in Greensboro, Ga.
On April 12-13, the Spartans will play in the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
As a precursor to postseason play, Michigan State will in the Oak Hill Intercollegiate, hosted by Notre Dame, on April 19-20 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. Oak Hill hosts its third PGA Championship this weekend, having previously held the event in 1980 and 2003. The club has also been the home to three U.S. Opens (1956, 1968, 1989), the 1995 Ryder Cup, the 1984 U.S. Senior Open, the 2008 PGA Senior Championship and two U.S. Amateur Championships (1949, 1998).
For the third-straight season, the Big Ten Championship will be played at the French Lick Resort. The 72-hole event will be held on May 2-4.
The NCAA Regionals will be May 15-17 at six possible sites, leading into the NCAA Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchison, Kan., on May 27-June 1.
