East Lansing, Mich. - Led by solid goaltending from sophomore standout Jeff Lerg and a goal by freshman Jay Sprague, the White team defeated the Green in a shootout, 2-1, in the Michigan State hockey team's annual intra-squad scrimmage Tuesday night at Munn Ice Arena.
Jeff Lerg had 35 saves on the night and stopped 13 of 15 shooters in the shootout that followed. Sprague, who opened the scoring at 12:44 of the second period, also had the game-clinching shootout goal against freshman netminder Bobby Jarosz. Freshman Ryan Turek notched the lone marker for the Green squad to tie the contest, finishing a centering feed from captain Chris Lawrence just 33 seconds after Sprague scored.
As opposed to the traditional 20-minute periods, the Spartans played three 15-minute sessions. Each skater had an attempt in the shootout that followed.
State, ranked #4/#5 in the nation in the preseason polls, opens its 2006-07 campaign this Friday, Oct. 6, with an exhibition tilt against Canadian university Wilfred Laurier. The opening face-off is scheduled for 7:05.
