EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State hockey team took part in the Green and White exhibition game on Saturday night at Munn Arena where Team Green edged the White, 2-0. The Green squad broke a scoreless tie in the third period with goals from Dean Chelios and Ryan Keller.
"The warm weather made for some tough ice conditions," said MSU head coach Tom Anastos. "I think we got done tonight what we were hoping to accomplish and we'll be ready to get back at it tomorrow morning bright and early."
Saturday's game featured an added element of honorary media coaches. The five honorary coaches on each staff served in various roles both behind the bench and in the press box throughout the game. Jason Colthorp (WILX TV-10), Chris Solari (Lansing State Journal), Steve Miller (WVFN 730 AM), Alyssa Girardi (Michigan Hockey Magazine) and Neil Koepke (MSUSpartans.com) coached the Green squad. Fred Heumann (WLNS TV-6), Sheri Jones (WLNS TV-6), Audrey Dahlgren (WLNS TV-6), David "Mad Dog" DeMarco (WVFN 730 AM) and Zach Smith (State News) were the honorary coaches for Team White.
"It seems like everyone enjoyed themselves and they did a good job," said Anastos. "I know our guys certainly enjoyed having them."
The goal by Chelios at the 41 second mark of the third period came on a deflection off a shot by Travis Walsh. Keller made it 2-0 with just over five minutes to play as he slipped past the defense and made a nice play to beat Will Yanakeff.
"I thought the guys played hard and there were some nice plays, but we have a long way to go," said Anastos.
Both Yanakeff and Jake Hildebrand played the entire game. Yanakeff made 23 stops, while Hildebrand stopped all 18 shots he faced.
Saturday marked the first day that NCAA hockey teams could begin practicing on a full schedule. The Spartans will host Western Ontario on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game. The game will air on Fox Sports Detroit.
