White Tops Green in Intrasquad Game
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In a game dominated by defense, it was fitting that a converted defenseman now playing left wing scored the game-winning goal.
Senior Jon Gaskins, playing his first game as a forward since youth hockey, took a pass from senior center Sean Berens on a two-on-one and beat Green goaltender Chad Alban for the eventual game winner 14:18 into the first of two 25-minute halves.
Stellar goaltending from freshman Joe Blackburn (14 saves) allowed the White team to maintain its one-goal lead and hold on for the win in front of 4,219 at Munn Ice Arena.
The Green team opened the scoring on a power-play goal by Bryan Adams, who looked strong after undergoing off-season back surgery. Sophomore defenseman Mike Weaver evened the score with a goal off a pretty pass from sophomore center Shawn Horcoff seven minutes later.
Overall, the defense was the strong point, as Green goaltender Alban made 11 saves, sophomore Mike Gresl played on both teams and combined for 18 saves and Blackburn earned first star of the game for his efforts.
