Men's Hockey Ties Guelph in Hockey Season Opener
EAST LANSING, Mich.-Mike York scored two goals and the Spartans held Guelph to 12 shots, but two late power-play goals by the Gryphons gave the visitors a 3-3 tie tonight at the Munn Arena in MSU's season opener.
York scored the game's first goal and added a second while shorthanded early in the third, making the score 3-1 MSU.
A five-minute major penalty against the Spartans gave the Gryphons a chance to get back in it, and they took advantage, scoring twice within 30 seconds and tying the score at three.
Michigan State had several overtime opportunities, but was denied by goaltender Mark Gowan, who finished with 46 saves.
MSU carries an 0-0-1 record into next Friday's meeting with Boston university in Madison, Wis.
