No. 1 Spartan Hockey Drops Game to Ohio State, 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Unranked Ohio State pulled off an upset of Michigan State Friday night at the OSU Ice Arena, topping the No. 1-ranked Spartans 4-2 in front of 1,502 fans. The Buckeyes came looking for the win and extended their nation-leading win streak to eight games.

Ohio State got up on the board first with a breakaway goal from Todd Compeau only 29 seconds into the game. MSU standout Mike York tied it up with a power play goal for the Spartans late in the period (17:24), regaining the momentum for Michigan State heading into the second.

The Buckeyes took the lead again at 6:48 of the second on a goal from Hugo Boisvert set up by Eric Meloche. MSU peppered Buckeye netminder Jeff Maund with 12 shots, but couldn't get past him to regain the lead in the second.

With Ohio State leading 2-1 in the third period, the Buckeyes' Campeau scored his second of the game off a pass from Dan Cousineau. The Spartans pulled within a goal when senior Kevin O'Keefe scored to bring the score to 3-2.

With less than a minute left, head coach Ron Mason pulled goalie Chad Alban, but OSU was able to steal the puck and add an empty netter to push the final score to 4-2.

MSU went 1-3 on the power play and held Ohio State scoreless on its single man-advantage. MSU outshot OSU 36-32. The game proved chippy with the Spartans taking 9-18 and the Buckeyes 11-22 in penalties.

Michigan State is currently the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in three of the four major college hockey polls. The Spartans record moves to 22-4-4 overall and 14-4-3 in CCHA play. Ohio State improves to 17-10-1 overall, and owns a 14-9-0 mark in the CCHA.
