Two Spartans Earn CCHA Weekly Honors
Jeff Lerg, Michael Ratchuk tabbed as goaltender, defensive Players of the Week
Jan. 7, 2008
East Lansing, Mich. - - Michigan State hockey goaltender Jeff Lerg was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week, and sophomore blueliner Michael Ratchuk earned the CCHA Defensive Player of the Week in the announcement made by the CCHA office on Monday, Jan. 7. The Spartans are coming off a three-point weekend at home against Lake Superior State (8-2, 3-3).
Ratchuk had three goals and an assist to lead the Spartans in scoring in a three-point weekend at home. He had a pair of goals and an assist on Friday, and added the game-tying goal on Saturday night. Two of his three goals on the weekend came on the power play, helping the Spartans to a 4-for-11 performance on the man advantage in two games. Ratchuk has six points in his last three contests (4-2-6) and ranks sixth nationally in points per game by a defenseman (0.86). Ratchuk was the first and third star, respectively, in the weekend's two games. It is his first CCHA Weekly honor this season.
Lerg stopped 63 of 68 shots on the weekend, including four in overtime on Saturday, in a three-point weekend for the Spartans. This is the third weekly honor this season for the junior netminder, who also earned weekly kudos on Nov. 5 for his part in sweeping Alaska (3-2, 3-2) in Fairbanks, and on Dec. 3 when the Spartans recorded a road sweep of LSSU.
Michigan State has a big weekend on tap, when it comtests a home-and-home series with sixth-ranked Notre Dame. The teams will play Friday in East Lansing (7:35 p.m., FSN Detroit) and then on Sunday in South Bend, Ind. (4:05 p.m., CSTV). Both games can be heard locally on WJIM 1240 AM.
