East Lansing - Sophomore netminder Jeff Lerg has been named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday morning. It is the third time that Lerg has earned weekly honors from the League office this season.
Lerg stopped 54 of 56 pucks thrown his way (.964) in the weekend series against Lake Superior. He made 27 stops as the Spartans posted a 3-2 overtime win on Friday, then recorded his third shutout of the season on Saturday - a 27-save, 4-0 victory. It was the sixth shutout of his career, which ties him for fifth on the MSU career shutout list. He shares fifth place with Matt Migliaccio (2002-05), Ron Scott (1980-83) and Joe Selinger (1956-59.
Lerg has been a huge part of the 9-1-0 streak that the Spartans have put together since mid-December.In that span, Lerg boasts a 1.95 goals against average and .933 save percentage. Those gaudy statistics have greatly improved his season numbers overall - in the last 10 games, Lerg's overall save percentage has gone from .891 to .909, and his goals against has dropped from 2.89 to 2.51.
The Spartan hockey team is idle this weekend, and returns to game action on Feb 2-3 at Nebraska-Omaha.
