Four-point weekend earns junior league honor.
Feb. 5, 2007
East Lansing - Michigan State junior centerman Bryan Lerg has been named the CCHA Player of the Week, released Monday morning by the league office. Lerg had a four-point weekend as the Spartans picked up a win and a tie on the road at Nebraska-Omaha last weekend, extending their unbeaten streak to seven games.
Lerg scored twice and added an assist in a 5-1 win on Friday, his multiple-point effort his first since the Great Lakes Invitational. However, he has 11 goals and 19 points in his last 14 games. Lerg's first goal of the night stood as the game-winner, his nation's-best seventh of the season. Lerg is just one off the team single-season record of eight, shared by Mitch Messier and Steve Beadle.
On Saturday, potted his 18th goal of the season in the middle frame to knot the score at two, a game eventually settled in a 3-3 overtime deadlock. Not only is 18 a single-season best for Lerg, but in 2005-06, Drew Miller led the Spartans with 18 goals in 45 games.
The junior's CCHA Player of the Week nod is his second of the season. He also earned the honor after being named the Most Valuable Player of the Great Lakes Invitational.
The Spartans play a pair of games against CCHA clustermates this weekend, hosting Ferris State on Friday at Munn Arena before taking on archrival Michigan at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Saturday.
