East Lansing, Mich. -- - Michigan State junior netminder Will Yanakeff (Jerome, Mich.) has been named the CCHA/Warrior Goaltender of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It is his first weekly honor of the season.
Yanakeff backstopped the Spartans in a split at Alaska last weekend. Making his first back-to-back starts since early November, Yanakeff turned away 76 of 79 shots he faced in the two games. Yanakeff had a 37-save shutout -on Friday in a 1-0 game, recording his first shutout of the season (and third of his career) and tying his season high for saves set in the season opener at Minnesota.
A night later, MSU surrendered three power-play goals and fell by a 4-2 margin, but Yanakeff recorded a season high 39 stops to keep the Spartans in the game. MSU was outshot by a 37-14 margin on Friday, and 43-24 on Saturday.
Yanakeff made back-to-back starts for the first time since Nov. 3 (BG) and Nov. 9 (Michigan).
Yanakeff and the Spartans are preparing for a two-game set against Western Michigan at home on Friday and Saturday in the final regular-season weekend of CCHA play. Gametime both nights is at 7 p.m., but fans are asked to arrive no later than 6:45 p.m. on Saturday to take in the Senior Night ceremony.
