Automatic bye ... By virtue of its CCHA regular-season and playoff championships, Michigan State has secured a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament, which begins Friday, March 27, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Albany, N.Y., hosts the Eastern Regional. Michigan State is making its 18th appearance in the NCAA tournament, fifth all-time. Head coach Ron Mason is in his 18th tournament as a head coach, an NCAA record.

About the bye ... Michigan State will play its first game Saturday, March 28, against the winner of a game from the previous day. The winner of Saturday's game advances to the final four in Boston April 2 & 4.

The bye has proven to be a big advantage since the NCAA tournament expanded to 12 teams in 1988. Thirty-two of the 40 teams with byes in that time reached the final four, including 17 of 20 in the last five years.
