March 30, 1998

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior defenseman Tyler Harlton (Pense, Sask.) has been named to the 1998 GTE Academic All-District IV University Division Men's Fall/Winter Sports At-Large Team.

Harlton, a three-year captain and All-America candidate on the MSU hockey team, carries a 3.75 grade-point average in political theory and constitutional democracy in MSU's James Madison College. He also has a minor in business and will graduate this spring.

Harlton was a second-team Academic All-District selection a year ago. He has earned numerous academic honors, including a spot on the CCHA All-Academic Team each of the last three years.

On the ice, Harlton led the Spartans to CCHA regular-season and playoff championships. His +38 plus/minus rating led the league, and he was named first-team All-CCHA and was a unanimous pick as the CCHA's Best Defensive Defenseman.

The GTE Academic All-District Team is made up of 10 student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee competing in 10 fall or winter sports. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Harlton and the other members of the All-District team will be included on the ballot for Academic All-America honors, to be announced April 21.
