Big Ten Announces Inaugural Hockey Schedule

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- - The Big Ten office has announced the dates and opponents for the inaugural season of Big Ten men's ice hockey. The Big Ten Conference begins play in 2013-14, with each of the six schools playing a 20-game schedule, taking on each opponent at home as well as on the road.

Michigan State will announce its full 2013-14 schedule when it is finalized.

The 2013-14 Big Ten hockey schedule will feature 60 games beginning in late November, with the majority of contests being played on Friday and Saturday. The schedule will also feature a limited number of games on Thursday, Sunday and Monday.

MSU played four of the five other Big Ten schools during the 2012-13 campaign, but has not played Wisconsin since the 2010-11 season, in the final College Hockey Showcase. The Spartans saw Michigan four times, and played two games each against Ohio State, Minnesota, and Penn State. The Nittany Lions were a first-year varsity program in 2012-13, playing an independent schedule in advance of the formation of the Big Ten Conference for the coming season.

Start times and television coverage for Big Ten hockey games will be announced at a later date. Conference play begins the weekend after Thanksgiving (Friday, Nov. 29), as Ohio State-Michigan and Wisconsin -Minnesota kick off the inaugural season.

Eighteen of MSU's Big Ten Conference games will be played after Jan. 1. The Spartans open league play on Dec. 6-7 at home against Minnesota, and play their first road series at Ohio State Jan. 10-11. Three straight home games against Penn State (Jan. 17-18) and Michigan (Jan. 24) follow, prior to MSU's annual showdown with the Wolverines at Joe Louis Arena on Jan. 25.

Michigan State's series at Minnesota is still pending final dates - the two-game series will be played either Thursday/Friday(Jan. 30-31) or Friday/Saturday (Jan. 31-Feb. 1).

MSU has two of its three February series on the road. The Spartans host Ohio State (Feb. 7-8) before traveling back-to-back weekends to Penn State (Feb. 14-15) and Wisconsin (Feb. 21-22). A home-and-home series with Michigan opens March play; MSU's game at Yost on Fri. March 7 is its final road conference game. The Spartans host the Wolverines on Saturday, March 8, and entertain Wisconsin in the regular-season finale on March 14-15.

The inaugural Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament will be held March 20-22, 2014, at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The tournament will feature all six teams in a single-elimination format.
