Abdelkader's Last-Minute Tally Hands Spartans Third NCAA Title

Justin Abdelkader snapped a tie with 18.9 seconds to go, seconds after ringing a shot off the post in Michigan State's 3-1 victory over Boston College in the NCAA hockey championship game Saturday night. Michigan State, playing in front of a record crowd of 19,402, won its third championship and first since 1986. Tim Kennedy tied it midway through the third period, and set up the go-ahead goal from behind the net when he spun off his man and passed the puck in front. Abdelkader, the MVP of the finals, beat Cory Schneider for his 15th goal and first in nine games.
Spartans Advance to NCAA Title Game

Michigan State scored four unanswered goals to rally from an early 2-0 deficit to post a 4-2 victory over Maine on Thursday in the NCAA semifinals in St. Louis, Mo. Nick Sucharski potted the game-winner early in the third frame, after Chris Mueller and Chris Snavely scored in the opening and middle frame, respectively, to get MSU back into the game after watching the Black Bears stake a 2-0 lead just 3:24 into the game. Jeff Lerg made 29 saves, shutting out the Maine offense for the final 36 minutes of the game to record his 25th victory of the season.
Comley Named National Coach of the Year Finalist

Michigan State hockey coach Rick Comley is one of eleven coaches named finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I men's ice hockey coach by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). To be a finalist for this award, a coach must either be voted Coach of the Year in his conference or take his team to the NCAA Frozen Four.

By virtue of the win, the Spartans advance to the Frozen Four for the 11th time overall and first time since 2001.

MSU Takes Third-Place Game In Overtime Thriller, 7-6

Senior Tyler Howells played the role of overtime hero for the Michigan State hockey team as it defeated Lake Superior State, 7-6, in the CCHA Consolation Game Saturday afternoon at Joe Louis Arena. The extra session was necessary after Lake Superior State scored two goals in the final 67 seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.
Spartans fall to Michigan in CCHA Semifinals

Michigan received two goals from junior Kevin Porter and 18 saves from Billy Sauer to top Michigan State 5-2 in the CCHA Championships semifinals Friday night at Joe Louis Arena, snapping a seven-game unbeaten streak for the Spartans at the venue. MSU will now face Lake Superior State in the CCHA consolation game Saturday afternoon.

Michigan State will advance to the CCHA Championship weekend at Joe Louis Arena for the 25th time in 26 seasons, completing a two-game sweep of Nebraska-Omaha. The Spartans advance with a 4-1 win on Saturday evening in the best-of-three quarterfinal round, getting a goal and an assist from Tim Crowder, Chris Mueller, and Jim McKenzie in the victory, but more importantly will make their 17th consecutive appearance in the CCHA's showcase weekend.

Junior Jim McKenzie potted the go-ahead goal at the 19-minute mark of the third period to stunt a late Nebraska-Omaha rally and help propel Michigan State to a 4-2 victory over the Mavericks in game one of the best-of-three quarterfinal series at Munn Ice Arena on Saturday evening. Jeff Lerg made 23 saves and McKenzie and Bryan Lerg each had a goal and an assist to help MSU to the win.

Michigan State suffered its first loss on a senior night in its last eight tries, falling 2-1 to Bowling Green at Munn Arena on Saturday evening. The Spartans suffered their second straight loss at home, and fall to 19-12-3 overall on the season and 15-10-3 in the CCHA. Bowling Green, which finishes 12th in the CCHA standings with a 5-22-1 conference record and is now 7-27-2 overall, will be on the road for next weekend's first round of the CCHA playoffs.

The Spartans got goals from Bryan Lerg, Tim Kennedy, and the equalizer from Tyler Howells in the deadlock, which extended MSU's unbeaten streak to seven games. Michigan State is now 17-8-2 on the year, 13-6-2 CCHA.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) announced its preseason polls and all-conference teams today at its annual media day in Detroit, Mich., and while Michigan State earned the most first-place votes of any school, it only earned the top spot in the coaches poll - the media votes found the Spartans second to Michigan, one point behind the Wolverines.
