EAST LANSING - Michigan State hockey head coach Danton Cole announced the Spartans’ schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season on Thursday, June 29. The Spartans drop the puck on the 34-game regular season on Oct. 13.
With the addition of Notre Dame as a Big Ten affiliate member for hockey, the seven league teams will now play 24 conference games. The Spartans will play four nonconference series against familiar opponents as they’ll meet former CCHA foes Bowling Green (Oct. 13-14), Western Michigan (Oct. 20-21) and Ferris State (Nov. 17-18) in home-and-home sets. MSU will also host Lake Superior State in a weekend series (Oct. 27-28).
BGSU last visited Munn in February 2013, while MSU and WMU last played a home-and-home series in November 2013. The Spartans will be meeting FSU in a home-and-home series for the second straight season and taking on LSSU for the third straight year.
The 53rd Annual Great Lakes Invitational rounds out the Spartans’ nonconference schedule. Dates and times for this year’s tournament at Little Caesars Arena will be announced in July.
The Spartans will be making their 44th appearance in the GLI and will meet host Michigan Tech in the semifinals for a right to take on Michigan or Bowling Green in the title game.
The Spartans will play 10 league games before the end of the 2017 calendar year, starting with Nov. 3-4 at Minnesota as MSU will have its earliest start to Big Ten play since the league's inception.
MSU's first Big Ten action of the year at Munn Ice Arena will be Nov. 10-11 against Wisconsin. Two weeks later, MSU will travel to Penn State over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 24-25.
The Spartans will welcome former CCHA rival Notre Dame to Munn, Dec. 1-2, and then play a home-and-home series with Michigan, Dec. 8-9.
The Spartans will have three Big Ten series in January, beginning at Munn on Jan. 5-6 vs. Ohio State, followed by a trip to Wisconsin, Jan. 12-13. Michigan State will host Minnesota Thursday, Jan. 18 and then meet the Gophers two days later on Jan. 20 at Madison Square Garden in New York as part of the Big Ten's "Super Saturday" series.
February will begin with a trip to Ohio State (Feb. 2-3), followed by the second home-and-home matchup with Michigan (Feb. 9-10). The Feb. 10 matchup will be the “Duel in the D” at Little Caesars Arena.
The Spartans' final home series will be Feb. 16-17 against Penn State and they'll close the regular season Feb. 23-24 at Notre Dame.
The 2018 Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament will feature a new three-weekend format with all games taking place on the campus of the higher-seeded teams. The tournament will open March 2-4 with three best-of-three quarterfinal series, as the second-, third- and fourth-seeded teams will each host a series. The top-seeded team will have a bye to the single-elimination semifinals, which are scheduled for Saturday, March 10. The highest-seeded team remaining after the semifinals will host a championship game scheduled for Saturday, March 17.
Times and television designations will be announced separately closer to the start of the season.
