July 22, 2013
East Lansing, Mich. - - Three former Michigan State players have earned invitations to their countries' pre-Olympic Orientation Camps, as announced by USA Hockey and Hockey Canada on Monday, July 22. Chicago Blackhawks blueliner Duncan Keith received an invitation from Team Canada, while Ryan Miller and Justin Abdelkader will go to USA Hockey's Camp. The camps are designed to assist in preparation and selection of the teams which will represent the countries in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, set for Feb. 7-23, 2014, in Sochi, Russia.
USA Hockey has invited 48 players to its camp, which will be held Aug. 26-27, at Kettler Capitals IcePlex in Arlington, Va. Miller is an Olympic veteran, backstopping the US squad to a silver medal in the 2010 Vancouver Games and earning Tournament MVP honors. Miller is the 2006 Vezina Trophy winner as the NHL's top goaltender, and in April 2013, played in his 500th NHL game, all with the Buffalo Sabres. Miller is an 11-year pro, and participated in the IIHF World Championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
Abdelkader just finished his fifth pro season, all with the Detroit Red Wings. Abdelkader's pro debut came in the spring of 2008, just days after completing his junior season with Michigan State. He appeared in two games, then was one of the team's "Black Aces" in its run to the 2008 Stanley Cup. He has appeared in 257 NHL games, and this season ascended to a role on the Red Wings' top line. Abdelkader gained international experience first with the 2007 World Junior Team which won a bronze medal in Mora and Leksand, Sweden. He most recently competed for Team USA at the 2012 IIHF World Championships.
Hockey Canada, along with Canada's National Men's Team management group, has invited 47 players to attend a national team orientation camp from Aug. 25-28 in Calgary. Keith was a member of the 2010 Canadian Gold Medal squad in Vancouver, and later that year won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman. Keith won Stanley Cups in 2010 and 2013 with the Chicago Blackhawks.
