Help Rename MSU Hockey's Student Section
Aug. 13, 2012
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- - As Spartan head coach Tom Anastos continues to usher in a new era of Michigan State Hockey, a new era in the student section will begin as well. MSU Athletics and the Student Alumni Foundation (SAF) have begun accepting suggestions on what to rename the student section at Munn Ice Arena, after being known as the "Slapshots" in recent years.
"I love the idea of renaming our student section. This renaming effort will help continue to bring new energy and a fresh feel to the groundswell of excitement that is re-energizing Spartan Hockey," said Anastos. "Our players and coaching staff view our student section as a vital part of our team. Last season we took a big step towards integrating those in our student section with our players in several team activities, and this year we expect to take that to an unprecedented level" said Coach Anastos.
At the start of the fall semester, a schedule of team/student events will be communicated to the student body by the SAF directors of the program. Last year, the student section was invited to tour the hockey facilities (including the team dressing room), had a dinner/Q&A session with the team, had a student section team photo, and the seniors were invited onto the ice after the final home game for a photograph with the team's graduating class as part of Senior Night festivities.
Students can submit their suggestions for the new name for the student section via the MSU Men's Hockey Facebook page, the SAF Facebook page , or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. All name suggestions must be submitted by Sunday, August 26 11:59PM.
Suggestions will be compiled and reviewed by Coach Anastos, the team, members of the MSU Athletics staff, and the leadership of SAF. The top three names will posted on www.msuspartans.com on Tuesday, August 28. Students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite through Friday, September 7. The winning name will be announced on Tuesday, September 11.
