East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State senior defenseman Brock Shelgren (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore goaltender Will Yanakeff (Jerome, Mich.) have been named the CCHA Defensive Player and Goaltender of the Week, respectively. The release came from the CCHA office on Monday afternoon.
Shelgren and Yanakeff each made significant contributions in helping MSU to a sweep of No. 5 Western Michigan in a road series last weekend. Shelgren had a team-best eight blocked shots - including a career-best seven on Friday - in the Spartans' sweep of the Broncos. Shelgren was a +4 on the weekend and contributed three assists, including the helper on the game-winner in Saturday's contest.
Yanakeff made a career-best 38 saves in Friday's victory, and another 28 on Saturday in helping the Spartans to a two-game road sweep WMU. On the weekend, Yanakeff stopped 66 of 70 shots against (.943). The sophomore has won three straight starts.
The Spartans, 6-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in CCHA play, have won four straight games and five of their last six contests. The Spartans had not swept back-to-back series since Dec. 2007, when MSU downed Lake Superior on the road and won both ends of a home-and-home series with Ferris State.
Michigan State readies for a trip to Marquette this weekend to tangle with No. 20 Northern Michigan. The Saturday game will air live on Fox Sports Detroit.
